Healthy eating on the move and in the garden

24.07.2023

This Saturday, a special episode of the podcast 'First the Patient', in which Monika Rachtan talks to gastroenterology specialist Dr Roland Kadaj-Lipka in a kitchen setting.

We will talk about healthy barbecues and digestive diseases, but also about holidays and travel issues, such as planning a trip when suffering from a chronic illness.

Dr Kadaj-Lipka is a gastroenterologist (colloquially gastrology). The guest talks about the differences between seeing a surgeon and a gastroenterologist. There is no shortage of topics related to cooking. Dr Kadaj-Lipka explains how the way we grill can affect our digestive system. We find out how to grill healthily and whether a burnt sausage from the grill is definitely healthy.

Pancreatic problems are also addressed in the programme. Dr Kadaj-Lipka discusses popular myths about diseases related to it and emphasises the importance of a proper diet for prevention and treatment. She also takes the opportunity to explain what an easily digestible diet really is and how we should follow it in case of health problems.

The holidays are a time for travel, so we ask our guest about travelling with a chronic illness. How do we prepare for such a trip, what do we take with us and what do we need to look out for? The guest shares advice, talks about the importance of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), and how to keep chronic illnesses under control when travelling.

In the context of digestive diseases, the conversation focuses on common symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, heartburn and bowel disorders. More complex terms such as gut microflora, gluten, celiac disease, elimination diets, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO) and fasting tests are also mentioned. Towards the end of the meeting, Dr Roland Kadaj-Lipka talks about the humanisation of medicine and the importance of the doctor-patient relationship.
